Jim "Jimmy" Owen Tharp

Jimmy “Jim” Owen Tharp, age 86, passed away peacefully on Thursday, April 23, 2026, with family at his side. Born on August 30, 1939, in Hohenwald, Tennessee, Jim was the son of Elmer Jessie and Jessie Sue Tharp. During childhood, Jim’s family relocated to Akron, Ohio, where he graduated from Akron Central High School in 1957. It was there that he met the love of his life, Marjoria “Margie” Ellen Morris, and the two were married on March 1, 1959, for 57 years. After honeymooning in Miami Beach, they made Palm Beach County, Florida their home in 1963, where they raised their only child, Timothy Jay Tharp. Jim enjoyed a long and dedicated career, retiring from Pratt & Whitney Aircraft after 38 years of service. Following retirement, he continued giving back by working parttime at Palm Beach Gardens High School where he had the special opportunity to coach with Tim for seven years—memories that remained especially dear to them both. A man of faith, Jim’s life centered on his personal relationship with Jesus Christ, his family, and the outdoors. He found joy in life’s everyday pleasures—working in the yard, cleaning the pool, washing cars, spending time outside, or enjoying a meal with friends and family. He was an avid handball player for more than 20 years, loved fishing, and followed sports enthusiastically, especially football. His passion for coaching and mentoring others left a lasting impression on many because he led by example. He and his wife Margie were faithful members of Christ Fellowship Church in Palm Beach Gardens for more than 25 years, helping to build the South Campus and serving together in the gift of helps through numerous volunteer ministries. Jim also served as an elder for over 20 years, quietly leading through service and faith. After Margie’s passing in 2016, Jim was blessed to meet Valerie Johnson. She became a cherished friend, offering companionship and support for the past nine years and walking beside him through the final chapter of his life. Her presence was truly a blessing to Jim and his family. Jim was predeceased by his beloved wife Marjoria “Margie” Tharp; his parents, Elmer and Jessie Tharp; his brother Jack Tharp and wife June; and his sisterinlaw Rosalie Martens and husband Tom. He is survived by his son, Timothy Jay Tharp and wife Rhonda; brotherinlaw Greg Morris and wife Michelle; nieces Donna Tharp Anderson and Heather Morris James; nephews Jeff Leslie and wife Diane, and Jim Leslie and wife Kim; along with numerous greatnieces, greatnephews, and their families. A Celebration of Life service will be held on Saturday, May 2, 2026, from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at Christ Fellowship Trinity Campus, 9625 North Military Trail, Palm Beach Gardens, Florida 33410.
