Cecile "Cele" Kelly Sloan

Cecile “Cele” Kelly Sloan, 91, of Jupiter, FL, passed away peacefully on August 22, 2026. Born June 15, 1935, in New York City, daughter of the late Cecile C. Kelly and Dr. Richard J. Kelly. While growing up in Manhattan, she attended Covent of the Sacred Heart. In her teens the family moved to Westchester County where she graduated from Rye High School, before returning to the city to begin her career at Time Inc. There she formed friendships that would stay with her forever — including her roommate, Gipsey (Gertrude Altemus Mercer), who was Julian’s stepsister. Through Gipsey, Cele met Julian, the man who would become her husband and the love of her life. Julian predeceased her in 2014, after 57 years of marriage. Cele and Julian married on August 18, 1956, building a life first in New York City and later in New Canaan, Connecticut, where they raised their three children. Cele created a home filled with warmth and curiosity. Cele had a unique ability to bring people together. She introduced friends who became family, neighbors who became lifelong companions, and colleagues who found community through her. Many have expressed deep gratitude for this gift — a quiet, natural way she had of seeing people, understanding them, and creating bonds that endured. She is survived by her brother, Richard J. Kelly Jr.; her three children: H Edesse Sloan, Julian R. Sloan III, and Margot S. Sloan, and their respective partners: John Tavarnesi, Liliana Sloan, and Dan Smith; her four grandchildren: Samuel, Amelia, Lauren, and Julia; and three great- grandchildren, with a fourth expected in October. She was preceded in death by her sister, Angela K. Farrand, and is lovingly remembered by Angie’s children: William, Richard, and Deirdre. A memorial service is planned for next summer in Chatham, Massachusetts, with a burial to follow at St. Columba’s Chapel in Middletown, Rhode Island.
