Sister Constance O'Meara

SISTER CONSTANCE O'MEARA of the Sisters of Mercy of the Americas died Wednesday (October 26, 2011) in West Hartford. Daughter of the late Eugene and Constance (Connor) O'Meara, Sister was born in Norwalk, but it was Kent she called "home". After her second year of college and at the age of 20, she entered the Sisters of Mercy on July 2, 1946 and finished her degree in Education at Madison. Sister went on to earn a master's degree in physics from the Catholic University of America in Washington and an Advanced Degree in education from St. Joseph College while simultaneously teaching in several schools in the state including St. Mary, Greenwich, Mt. St. Joseph Academy, Lauralton Hall and, most recently, St. Joseph College in West Hatford where she served for 19 years. During that time she was a member of the math department faculty and a tutor at what is now the Center for Academic Excellence. In addition to her teaching, Sister Constance contributed to the college community in other ways. Many will remember her enthusiastic drumming at Sunday liturgies and at the annual Festival of Lights. Her pen and ink sketches of major buildings on campus enhance many college publications. Sister also was Director of Novices and a member of the CT Sisters of Mercy Leadership Team. Artist, calligrapher, gardener, seamstress, world traveler, lover of nature – Sister Constance, affectionately called Mimi by her nieces and nephew, was truly a Renaissance woman of the 21st century! In 2010 Sister retired to the Frances Warde Towers apartments at St. Mary Home where she continued to regard all people and things with the appreciation of an artist. Sister Constance is survived by her brother Eugene O'Meara and his wife Ruth; a nephew Christopher O'Meara; 2 nieces, Carmel Karina O'Meara and Sarah O'Meara Lone and her husband Samir; a new grand-niece, Sophia, whose Baptism day Sister Constance was happily awaiting; and the Sisters of Mercy, especially those of the Lourdes and Frances Warde Towers communities. A Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated on Monday, October 31 at 6:00 PM in the chapel at St. Mary Home, 2021 Albany Ave., West Hartford. This will be preceded by a wake from 3:30 to 5:45 PM. Burial will be at St. Mary Cemetery on Tuesday at 9:00 AM.
