July 16, 1933 - March 13, 2018
Kathleen Carmel Browne (nee Phelan), died on March 13, 2018, in Jupiter, Florida, surrounded by her loving family. Carmel was born July 16, 1933 in Waterford, Ireland, the ninth of eleven children of William Francis Phelan and Mary (Kennedy) Phelan. Growing up, Carmel was an accomplished horsewoman, and family fame included a horse bred by the Phelan family (Freebooter) winning the Grand National Steeplechase at Aintree Racecourse in 1950. She was educated by the Madames of the Sacred Heart Convent in Waterford. Carmel married orthopaedic surgeon Dr. Michael Browne, the love of her life, in 1958, then emigrated to the United States. After Michael completed further training in Boston and New York, the couple settled in Stamford, Connecticut, where they lived for thirty-five years. Carmel was a dedicated wife and homemaker, raising five children with constant love and commitment. While living in Stamford, Carmel and Michael were faithful parishioners of the Church of St. Cecilia on Newfield Avenue. Carmel was always an avid golfer and the Brownes were active members of Innis Arden Golf Club in Old Greenwich for over thirty years. Carmel and Michael retired to Jupiter, Florida in the mid-1990s where they enjoyed a long and lovely retirement together as active members of the Jonathan’s Landing community and parishioners of St. Jude’s Catholic Church in Tequesta. Carmel continued to be a keen golfer, twice making a hole-in-one! She loved spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren, on their frequent visits to Florida. Carmel will always be remembered for her beauty and elegance, grace, passion for life, and her gentle, loving ways. May all our lives be so fulfilled. We are heartbroken at her passing and will miss her dearly. Carmel is survived by her five children - Francis Joseph (Janet Sims), an attorney in Stamford, Connecticut; Rosemary Siobhan (Christopher McGrory), a geriatric physician in Tucson, Arizona; Michael Gerard, an orthopaedic surgeon in Mineral Wells, Texas; Paul William, an architect in Albuquerque, New Mexico; and Colm Patrick (Kristen Greene), an attorney in Stamford, Connecticut – and her twelve grandchildren – Kathryn, Marissa, Liam, Caitlin, Michael, Jack, Fintan, Connor, Evan, Lauren, Anna and Elliott. Carmel is also survived by three of her brothers - Patrick, Michael, and Robert Phelan, all of whom reside in Ireland. Carmel is preceded in death by her beloved husband Michael Alexander Browne, her parents William and Mary Phelan, and her siblings Mary (Wright), Jack, Nicholas, Willy, Thomas, Brede (Mullowney) and Maurice Phelan. A Mass of Christian Burial is scheduled for 10 a.m., Monday, March 19, 2018 at St. Jude’s Catholic Church, 204 U.S. Highway One, Tequesta, Florida. Visitation will take place from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Sunday, March 18th at the Taylor & Modeen Funeral Home, 250 Center Street, Jupiter, Florida. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Carmel’s life. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in her memory to the Catholic Charities USA (catholiccharitiesusa.org).
