John Clifford Johnson

John Clifford Johnson, husband of Jean Campbell Johnson died on January 16, 2015. A resident of West Hartford, he was born on June 1, 1920 in the Redding section of Georgetown, Connecticut. He was the son of John Gunnar Johnson and Signe Haggren Johnson. Besides his beloved wife of 66 years, he is survived by his daughter, Beth J. Briggs and her husband David L. Briggs of Newington, Connecticut and a grandson, David M. Briggs of Toledo, Ohio. He was predeceased by his son John C. Johnson Jr. He was a member of the First Church of Christ Congregational in West Hartford, Connecticut. He enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II and served in the Eighth Air Force in England. He flew in 25 bombing missions to Germany as a tail gunner on a B-17 and returned to the United States where he served the remainder of the war at Buckingham Air Base in Ft. Myers, Florida as a gunnery instructor for B-29 fliers destined for the Pacific Theatre. After discharge from the Army, he entered the University of Connecticut in 1945 and graduated in 1949 with a Bachelors degree in Business Administration. He was a member of Theta Chi fraternity and served as president for one year. He was employed by the Aetna Insurance Company ("The Little Aetna") for 31 years in Dallas, Houston, Boston and Hartford. He was a life member of the Chartered Property and Casualty Underwriters Association (CPCU). He belonged to the American Legion Post 96 in West Hartford, the Eighth Air Force Historical Society,the West Hartford Squires men's club where he bowled with the duckpin bowling group; the Wethersfield Art League, and the Robert Low Woodcarvers Club of Wethersfield. He enjoyed golf and was a longtime member of the Rockledge Men's Club and the Squires Golf group. A memorial service will be held in the chapel at the First Church of Christ Congregational 12 South Main Street, West Hartford on Monday, January 19, 2015 at 2:00pm. There are no calling hours. Burial will be private at Fairview Cemetery, West Hartford. Memorial contributions can be made in John's name to First Church of Christ Congregational.
