Doris (Webster) Newman

Doris (Webster) Newman, 90, of Bloomfield, wife of William O. Newman, died peacefully Thursday, June 9, 2016 surrounded by family. Born in Northampton, Massachusetts, the daughter of the late Merton and Pauline (Jarvis) Webster, Doris moved to West Hartford as a young girl. She attended Beech Park Elementary School, and graduated from Oxford School, Class of 1944, and Briarcliff Junior College, Briarcliff Manor, NY, Class of 1946. On September 6, 1947, Doris married her first husband, Audley C. Britton. They lived in several area towns, finally settling in West Hartford in 1963 where they raised a family. In 1981, when Audley died unexpectedly, Doris stepped into his position as president of Webster & Webster Fence and Guardrail Company of East Hartford, which had be founded in 1908 by her father and uncle. She held that position for several years before retiring in 1989. She remarried twice, first in 1992, to Donald Hartford, who predeceased her, and then in 1997, to Bill Newman, who survives her. Upon her death, she and Bill maintained homes in Bloomfield, Vero Beach, FL, and Weekapaug, RI. Doris was a member of Asylum Hill Congregational Church and a long time volunteer with the Junior League of Hartford and Hartford Hospital Auxiliary. She belonged to the Seedling Garden Club, the Weekapaug Foundation for Conservation, and the Daughters of the American Revolution. She was also a member of the Hartford Golf Club and the Moorings Yacht and Country Club in Vero Beach. Doris loved to garden and make beautiful flower arrangements. In her later years she would enjoy arranging many of the flowers at Duncaster for all of the residents and visitors to enjoy. She also enjoyed needlepoint, golf, tennis, skiing, and many days at the beach with her toes in the sand, and her eyes on the grandchildren and the surf. In addition to Bill, she is survived by her three children, William W. "Scott" Brittton and his long time partner Claudia Norsworthy of West Hartford, Peter M. Britton and his wife Marivonne Basten of New York City, and Caroline Britton Gordon and her husband Kilbourn Gordon, III M.D. of Darien; her grandchildren, Emily Britton, Elizabeth "Jill" Britton, Sarah Britton, Lindsay Gordon, Kilbourn "Britt" Gordon IV, Holly Gordon, and Claire Britton; and her great-grandson, Jackson Landini. She was predeceased by two sisters, Jean Johnson and Louise Harlan. A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, June 25, 2016 at Asylum Hill Congregational Church, 814 Asylum Avenue, Hartford with the Reverend Matt Laney officiating. Burial at Kent, CT Congregational Church Cemetery will be private.
