Clare A. Gaffney

Clare A. Gaffney passed away Monday, June 18, 2012 at home. Clare was born in Dublin, Ireland May 19, 1928 to Francis and Margaret (McGahern) Gaffney. In Ireland, Clare belonged to a bicycle club and toured many areas with the club. She enjoyed dancing and could do a "mean" Irish Step Dance. After coming to the United States, Clare first worked for Cigna then joined The Hartford. There she held several positions in the Office Administration and Personal Lines Departments. Her greatest enjoyment at The Hartford was traveling to the Regional Offices and Agencies to train their personnel on the use of The Hartford's automated automobile system. Clare loved skiing and spent many skiing trips with her sister Dina and their friends. Clare looked forward to her trips to Ireland, Canada, and in the United States spending time with the family and friends. She is survived by her brother Frank and his wife Beverly, her niece Melissa, and her aunt Kay all of Canada; many cousins in the United States, Canada and Ireland; longtime friends Agnes Noctor of Dublin, Ireland, Nancy Downes of Dublin, Ireland and Jim and Maureen Kelly of Wethersfield, CT; special friends Anita, Esther, Sheila, and Barbara; and her cousin John Reilly and his wife Mona who visited her faithfully, sharing their Irish heritage stories. Clare also leaves her very devoted caregiver, Anna, who developed a special bond with Clare and was a blessing Clare needed her last one and a half years. A big "Thank You" to the staff of CT Hospice for their care and support. Clare will be deeply missed by her family and friends. In addition to her parents, Clare was predeceased by her sisters, Christina "Dina" Gaffney and Elizabeth "Lillie" Gaffney. Funeral services will be Thursday, June 21, 2012 with a procession at 9:15 a.m. from the Taylor & Modeen Funeral Home, 136 South Main Street, West Hartford followed by a Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. at the Church of Saint Timothy, West Hartford. Burial will follow at Mount Saint Benedict, Bloomfield. Calling hours will be Wednesday, from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
