Robert N.H. Sener

Robert Noel Hodshon Sener of West Hartford, CT, passed away on January 11, 2014. He was born in Baltimore, MD on Christmas day, 1933, the youngest child of Joseph Ward Sener and Clara Hodshon Sener. Bob leaves his wife, Marisela (Marcie) Aguila-Bosch, and three children and their families, Richard & Karen Sener of Burlington, VT, James Sener & Anne Dittmann of Glastonbury, CT and Julie & John Joyce of West Hartford, CT; five grandchildren, Cortlandt Sener and Kyla Sener of the Dominican Republic, Trevor Sener of Middletown and Jessica and Liam Joyce of West Hartford; and three step-grandchildren, Justin Ketrincheck of Los Angeles, CA, and John R. Joyce of Port Orange,Florida and Brett K. A. Joyce of Tucson, AZ. He also leaves a niece, Beverley Sener and her husband Richard Durham of Church Hill, MD, and nephews John TenEyck Sener and his wife Priscilla Morris of Claiborne, MD, and Joseph Ward Sener III of Huachuca City, AZ. Bob was predeceased by his first wife, Dorothy Tarleton Sener, and his brothers, Joseph Ward Sener of Church Hill, MD and Richard Sener of Chestertown, MD. Bob attended Gilman School in Baltimore and graduated from St. James School, St. James, MD. He attended Haverford College and St. Lawrence University and graduated from the University of Virginia in 1957 with a Bachelor of Science in Commerce from the McIntyre School of Commerce. He joined the Maryland Casualty Company in Richmond, VA in 1957 and in 1960 joined the United States Fidelity & Guaranty Company in Baltimore. In 1961 he joined the New Amsterdam Casualty Company in Baltimore, serving as the manager of their Bond Department in its NYC office. Three years later he became Vice President of the newly constituted Security Insurance Company of Hartford, serving under E. Clayton Gengras. In 1967 he joined The Hartford Insurance Group, where he spent 30 years, retiring as Vice President of their countrywide Bonding operation. During those years, Bob attained the Chartered Property & Casualty Underwriter designation, taught at the College of Insurance in NYC, and became an arbitrator for the New York Stock Exchange and the National Association of Securities Dealers. He served as Chairman of the Surety Association of America and later spent a number of years on the Board of the Foreign Credit Insurance Association. Bob also served on the Board of the American School for the Deaf in West Hartford and St. James School in Maryland. After retirement, Bob spent 13 years as a volunteer at John Dempsey Hospital in Farmington and also at Naples Community Hospital in Naples, FL. He also volunteered for Habitat for Humanity. For many years he enjoyed his home in Great Harbour Cay in the Bahamas where he leaves many friends, who called him 4-B ("Big Bad Bob from Baltimore"). All of his life he enjoyed golf, tennis, bridge and old cars. He was an avid basketball and baseball fan. He specially loved the UCONN Lady Huskies and his beloved Baltimore Orioles. He enjoyed his winters in Naples, FL and summers in Weekapaug, RI where he loved to gather his family and friends. He was a long time member of The Hartford Golf Club and Asylum Hill Congregational Church. He loved his children and family dearly and was always happiest when he was surrounded by them. His wife Marcie was his special pride and joy. Bob was a generous person, and a faithful friend, well-liked by young and old alike. The family will receive friends at Taylor & Modeen Funeral Home, 136 South Main Street, West Hartford from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, January 16. A memorial service will be held on Sunday, January 19th at 1:00 PM at Asylum Hill Congregational Church, 814 Asylum Avenue, Hartford, CT. Burial will be private at the convenience of the family at Fairview Cemetery in West Hartford.
