Joseph Thomas Hughes

Joseph Thomas Hughes was born on December 10, 1921, in Boston, MA. He was the only child of Joseph Vincent and Mary Agnes Hughes and grew up in Newtonville, MA. He was a longtime resident of West Hartford, CT, Osterville, MA and Singer Island, FL. Joe died peacefully on May 1, 2014 at Seabury in Bloomfield, CT at the age of 92. He leaves behind his beloved wife of sixty-three years, Elizabeth Louise "Betty" Hughes, and five children, Joseph T. Jr. "Chip" Hughes and his wife, Janis Kupersmidt of Chapel Hill, NC, Amy Ellen Hughes of West Hartford, CT, Mary Lisa Schaller and her husband Thomas of Towson, MD, Audrey Anne Hughes of West Hartford, CT and Robert Hughes and his wife Kathryn of Malvern, PA. In addition, he also leaves behind 18 grandchildren, Savannah McMurray and her husband Steven, Samuel Hughes, Miriam Hughes, Andrey Koch, Raya Koch, Bethany Odahara and her husband Jonathan, Amy Fenner and her husband Walter, Justin Schaller and his wife Ann Margaret, Kyle Schaller, Elizabeth Braunstein, Caroline Braunstein, Peter Braunstein, Tucker Hughes, Corey Hughes, Christian Hughes, and Keegan Hughes and 8 great-grandchildren, Mika, Jonathan, and Malia Odahara; Emma, Thomas, and Ethan Fenner; and Joshua and Natalie McMurray. He received an undergraduate degree in accounting from Boston University and an MBA from the Harvard Business School. He served as the President and CEO of the Allied Thermal Corporation in New Britain, CT for over 20 years. He was also proud to serve as a longtime Director and Director Emeritus of American Savings Bank and its charitable foundation. The American Savings Foundation has contributed a combined $38 million in grants to Central Connecticut communities for local nonprofit organizations, and in college scholarships to hard-working students in need of financial support. The Hughes family would like to thank the loving Seabury staff and community for all the support that they have provided to Joe and his family. Calling hours will be Sunday, May 4, 2014 from 4 – 7 p.m. at the Taylor & Modeen Funeral Home, 136 South Main Street, West Hartford. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, May 5, 2014 at the Church of Saint Timothy 1116 North Main Street, West Hartford. Burial at Holyhood Cemetery, Brookline, MA will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations in Joe's memory to the American Savings Foundation, 185 Main Street, New Britain, CT 06051 are preferred.
