H. Stuart Massie, Jr.

H. Stuart Massie, Jr., 86, of West Hartford, husband of the late Doris Louise (Anderson) Massie, died Tuesday, May 17, 2011 at Hartford Hospital. Born in Washington, DC, son of the late Herrick Stuart Massie and Louise Wills (Cobb) Massie, he grew up in Richmond. He was an Eagle Scout, and earned the Bronze, Silver and Gold Palms. A Veteran of WWII, he enlisted December 13, 1942 and served in the United States Army, attended Army Specialized Training (“AST”), and was separated from active duty July 22, 1946. He served as 1st Lt. with the Corps of Engineers in the European Theater of Operations then served with the active reserve USAR and AVS, until November 16, 1951. Under the GI Bill he graduated from University of Richmond in 1949 with a BS degree and was a member of Phi Gamma Delta, Omicron Delta Kappa and Who’s Who in American Universities. He received a Master of Business Administration from the Harvard Business School, where he met his wife who served on the staff of the graduate school. Mr. Massie joined Travelers Insurance Corp. in 1953 in Richmond, VA, as a Sales Representative in the Life, Health, and Financial Services Dept. He was promoted to Assistant Manager in the Raleigh, NC office in 1955, and to Manager in the Albany, NY office in 1957. In 1960 he was promoted to Manager of the Hartford office where he led the office to leading sales for the entire US and Canada. Mr. Massie was an active member of the 1st Baptist Church of West Hartford since 1961 and served the church as Deacon, Chairman of the Board of Trustees, and Chairman of several other committees. He was also active in the life insurance industry and was a member of the Life Underwriters Association and member and Past President of the General Agents and Managers Association of Greater Hartford. He was also active with the Harvard Business School Club of Northern Connecticut serving as an officer and Past President. In addition, he served on the Board of the Pastoral Counseling Center of West Hartford, and was an active supporter and board member for the YMCA Camp Jewell Outdoor Center in Colebrook, CT. He was an active member of the West Hartford Regents and served as Director of the Special Events Committee leading the Regents in the annual Memorial Day Parade. He was an avid gardener, swimmer, golfer and tennis player. He is survived by his children Herrick Stuart “Buck” Massie, III and his wife Claudia of Southington and Charlotte Massie and her fiancé Robert Przybylski of West Hartford; two grandsons Gregory West and Taylor Massie both of Southington; sister Jean (Massie) Bosch of Lancaster, PA; several nephews, nieces and cousins. A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, May 28, 2011, 4 p.m. at First Baptist Church, West Hartford. Burial will be private at the convenience of the family.
