Gerard P. Barrieau, Sr.

Gerard P. Barrieau Sr. of West Hartford, beloved husband for 57 years of the late Lorraine Lawrence Barrieau, entered into eternal rest on Friday, June 10, 2016 surrounded by his devoted and loving family. He was the son of the late Livain and Lydia Barrieau. Born May 4, 1928 in New Bedford MA, he spent the majority of his life in Wethersfield moving to West Hartford in 2005. An avid golfer, Gerard was a member of the Wethersfield Country Club and Mariner Sands Country Club in Stuart, FL where he spent his winters with his dear Lorraine. Gerard spent his entire work life devoted to building his business Barrieau Moving & Storage. From extremely humble beginnings he worked tirelessly loading, unloading, driving, selling and managing the business along with his wife Lorraine. He was innovative and was always looking for new ways of doing business. A man of countless accomplishments, he was the first person in the country to receive a commercial drivers license for twin trailers. He was a recipient of the American Moving & Storage Association Distinguished Service Award, State of Connecticut Transportation Man of the Year Award, and the Greater Hartford Chamber of Commerce Boss of the Year for Small Business. He was a past Chairman of the Motor Transport Association of Connecticut, past President of the Connecticut Movers & Warehousemen's Association, and board member of the American Movers Conference. Additionally, Gerard served as a regional Vice President for the American Trucking Association and was a founding director of The First Bank of West Hartford. Gerard was especially proud to say he was longest living member of the Franam, a French Canadian professional group. He was predeceased by his six sisters and brother. He leaves behind his loving son Gerard and his wife Joan of West Hartford and three adoring grandchildren: Gerard III (Gib) and his children Lauren (Lulu) and Gerard IV (Max) of West Hartford; Morgan and his wife Danielle of Boston, MA; and Jackie Barrieau Iacovazzi and her husband Drew of West Hartford. He also leaves his sister-in-law Francis Paquette of Portland, CT and brother and sister-in-law Thomas and Elizabeth Lawrence of Yulee, FL. He leaves dozens of nieces and nephews who truly loved their Uncle Gerard. The family wishes to thank the wonderful and caring staff at St. Mary Home in West Hartford. Over the last 15 months Anna, Karen, Faith, Sandra, Nelly, Carmel, Orlando and so many others cared lovingly and compassionately for Dad. Funeral services will be Tuesday, June 14 at 9:15 a.m. with a procession from the Taylor & Modeen Funeral Home, 136 South Main Street, West Hartford followed at 10 a.m. with a Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at the Church of Saint Peter Claver, 47 Pleasant Street, West Hartford. Entombment will follow at Mount Saint Benedict Cemetery, Bloomfield.
