George E. Heppner

George E. Heppner, 93, of West Hartford, husband of the late Joan (Muldoon) Heppner, died Friday, February 10, 2017 at St. Mary Home. Born in Hartford, the son of the late George and Lillian (Garland) Heppner, he grew up in Hartford and graduated from Hartford High School, Class of 1941. During WW II, George volunteered and served with the U.S. Army. Afterwards, he went on to graduate from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Class of 1951, and worked as the City Engineer for the City of Hartford for over 35 years, retiring in 1987. George and Joan married in 1957 and made their home in West Hartford. George was a lifelong member of American Society of Civil Engineers and a past president of their CT Chapter. He was a charter member of the Church of St. Peter Claver, a member of the West Hartford Squires and volunteered with Meals on Wheels. George was an avid photographer and travelled extensively with Joan later in life. He would present slides shows locally featuring pictures that captured the places they had visited. He was also a talented handy man and was always eager to help family with home renovations or repairs. George leaves four children and their spouses, Mary Ellen and Andrew Maly of San Antonio, TX, Christopher G. and Ewa Heppner of New Britain, CT, Gregory F. and Kathleen Duggan of Wenham, MA, and Patricia H. and Michael Quinn of Norridgewock, ME; eight grandchildren, Colleen Robinson and her husband Ryan, Michael Heppner, Caroline Heppner, Jennifer Heppner, Alexander Maly, Kevin Heppner, Nikki Maly, and Kerianne Heppner; and his sister-in-law, Jeanne Heppner. He was predeceased by a brother, Francis Heppner. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, February 16, 2017 at the Church of Saint Peter Claver, 47 Pleasant Street, West Hartford. Burial will follow at the Mount Saint Benedict, Bloomfield. Calling hours will be 8:30-9:30am on Thursday, February 16, 2017 at the Taylor & Modeen Funeral Home, 136 South Main Street, West Hartford.
