Emilio Macri, Sr.

Emilio Macri Sr., 89, formerly of West Hartford, CT, passed away on March 26, 2016 at Croton Manor ALF in Sarasota, FL. He was predeceased by his wife, Anna Maria (Zambrella) Macri. He was born in Gioiosa Ionica, Province of Reggio Calabria, Italy in 1926 and became a member of the Italian Military Police Force (Carabinieri) in 1943. He emigrated to Hartford, CT and married in 1953. In 1948, he began working at Dettenborn Woodworking Company. Later he worked for Zambrella Landscaping, which became Macri Landscape Service. He was also a home builder and built his own home which his family lived in for 45 years. In 1975, he started E & J Carpentry with his business partner Jack McFadden. After retiring in 1999, he enjoyed beach outings along the CT shore line and leisure vacations in New England. He also enjoyed boating, fishing, grilling outdoors, winemaking, playing cards and bocce. In his younger years, he played the accordion, joining in with some of his brothers who sang and played guitars. At Christmas time, he meticulously decorated his house, dressed as Santa and visited children in the family. In 2009, after his wife died, Emilio relocated to Florida and lived with family for a short time, before moving into Mary's On Bayshore ALF in Venice. Many thanks to everyone at the assisted living homes for their good care during his later years. He is survived by his son, Emilio, Jr., of Sarasota and his daughter and son-in-law, Mary Ann and Dan Street, of Myakka City, FL. He is also survived by his sister, Rose Fuda of Venice, FL and two sisters-in-law (Margaret Macri, Vernon, CT and Frances Macri, Port Charlotte, FL), several cousins, nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by two sisters who lived in Italy (Guilia and Carmela) and five brothers (Frank, Joseph, Albert, Orlando and Mario). Family and friends will be received Tuesday, April 12, 2016 at the Taylor & Modeen Funeral Home, 136 South Main Street, West Hartford from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. with a prayer service at 11 a.m. A private burial will follow at Mount St. Benedict Cemetery, Bloomfield.
