Ann P. Kilfoil

Ann P. Kilfoil, 89, of West Hartford passed from this life on Monday, January 13, 2014 at Arden Courts of Farmington where she had spent the last 7 ½ years. Ann was born in Hartford but soon moved to New Britain where her father had purchased a printing business. She was a graduate of St. Mary School (1938) and New Britain High School (1942). In 1946 she graduated from St. Joseph College in West Hartford with a degree in Social Work. Her first job was with the State of Connecticut, Department of Child and Family Services (DCF) where she supervised foster children in the north central part of the state. Five years later, she left DCF to work on her Master's degree at Fordham University in New York. While there, she had a placement at a Veteran's Hospital which she enjoyed. When she returned to New Britain, she lived only a few miles away from the Veteran's Hospital in Newington. She took a position there and remained until her retirement in 1985. She was especially successful at helping those with alcohol addiction turn their lives around. She enjoyed the work so much, she once said, "I can't believe they pay me to do this." As a friend of Ann's said, "She never stopped being a social worker, even when she retired. It was born in her, she was a natural. Ann enjoyed traveling especially trips with friends and family to New Orleans, the west coast, Alaska, Europe and Ireland. She was a member of the Newington Ski Club in the 50's and 60's spending many winter weekends on the slopes in Vermont. She was also a member and served as a treasurer of the Pilot Club of Hartford, an organization of women professionals. Ann's most important group had been the St. Joseph Prayer Group where she was often a leader. She had many long time friends in the group who are still praying for her. The onset of Alzheimer's in 2000 was devastating for Ann and her family. She was diagnosed in November of 2001 and moved to Arden Courts in July of 2006. She is survived by her sister Jean Kilfoil of West Hartford and her cousins. She was predeceased by her brother, Thomas F. Kilfoil. Ann's Funeral Mass will be Thursday, January 16 at 11:00 a.m. at the Church of Saint Peter Claver, 47 Pleasant Street, West Hartford. Burial will follow at Mount St. Benedict, Bloomfield. Calling hours will be Wednesday, 6 -8 p.m. and Thursday morning, 9 – 10:30 a.m. at the Taylor & Modeen Funeral Home, 136 South Main Street, West Hartford.
